Apple is now set to receive 15% from WeChat apps and games purchases on iOS

WeChat is the only app a Chinese person in China needs, as it also includes ‘mini’ apps and games. But this has long posed a problem for Apple. While the company charges a fee for every app and game purchase made through its App Store, these WeChat apps and games did not go through the App Store, so Apple didn’t get a penny.

But that is changing. WeChat owner Tencent has reached a deal with Apple under which the iPhone maker will begin handling payments for WeChat games and apps in China, and it will take a 15% cut of each purchase, according to a new report. bloomberg Report.

Given how big WeChat is in China, this could potentially make Apple hundreds of millions of dollars every year. Talks between Apple and Tencent on this matter have apparently been going on for more than a year.

The 15% fee is a concession on Apple’s part, as it usually takes 30% from app developers, but given the sheer size of this market and the fact that it wasn’t making any money before, it’s definitely a win. WeChat is used by 1.41 billion people every month.
